Lessons Learnt - Healthcare Funding and Professional Interactions

Discussions on healthcare funding and professional interactions with the diverse group of professionals in my MHS class highlighted some key points on the topics of Canadian Healthcare Funding and Professional Interactions within the healthcare system.

  • Across Canada, healthcare is funded both provincially and federally. A common source of Provincial healthcare funds is through taxes paid by citizens.

  • There is an ongoing debate on the issue of privatizing healthcare in Canada. Some Canadians are of the opinion that there should be a mix of private and public healthcare systems to provide options for Canadians and increase overall efficiency in the healthcare system. Others on the other hand oppose privatization.

  • Government healthcare policy decisions should be informed by the perspectives of frontline workers, who face the daily pressures and implications of policy decisions.

Various healthcare professionals collaborate routinely to deliver healthcare services. This professional collaboration is vital for holistic care, and for the effective and efficient integration of services. Effective communication is required for seamless interactions between different professional groups to occur.

  • There are specialized teams dedicated to service delivery in several healthcare settings. Examples include the Geriatric Mental Health and Applied Behaviours Collaboration Team who work in Supportive Living facilities in Alberta.

It is evident from these key themes that adequate funding and integration of services are key drivers of efficiency in the Canadian Health Care system. Visit my "Content Curation Page and the following links on funding, to learn more about the Canadian Healthcare System.
